Driver Certificate of Professional Competence was introduced by the Government in September 2008 for PSV and September 2009 for HGV Drivers. It's aim was to increase industry knowledge and used as a platform to inform drivers of any changes to the regulations.
You must have DCPC if you drive a lorry or bus as the main part of your job. You must do 35 hours or periodic training every 5 years to keep legal. There are 2 types of DCPC, Initial, if you are getting qualified to become a PSV or HGV driver or Periodic if you are already qualified.
From December 2024, the Government made changes in the way the periodic training could be delivered. Training has broken down into International and National. As the names suggest, if any part of your job sees you driving abroad, then you will need to complete the International DCPC and if you drive within the UK as part of your job, then you will need to complete the National DCPC. Both elements still require the 35 hours of periodic training over a 5 year period. Each module is 7 hours, or you can opt to break it down into 3.5 hour modules. Return to work
The industry wants to make it easier for qualified drivers to return to work if their DCPC has expired. So, if your DQC has expired between 60 days and 2 years, you can complete 7 hours of the Return to Work module and go back driving professionally. You will then have 12 months to complete the remaining 28 hours training.
